Aeress

"Calm yourself, I can still sense your blood racing," his voice encircled her, "your heart pounding. This will never work unless you try to some measure."

"I can't do it," she whispered with her eyes squeezed tightly shut. If she were honest, she would admit that she was completely terrified.

Every time he passed in front of her, a shadow shot cross her eyelids. The room was quiet and dark, lit from melted candles  bolted to the walls. The only sound was a trickling of water.

His voice sounded farther away. "You can. It's as natural as breathing."

She scoffed. "Easy for you to say, you don't have a demon living inside of you, do you?" She realized she sounded ridiculous saying that to a werewolf. They both knew it too.

"Stop thinking." He commanded. "Stop talking about trivial things. Just do."

Aeress grunted obnoxiously to display her frustration but decided to try this time, because the trials would come sooner than later and she wanted to be prepared as possible. She relaxed her eyelids and took in deep, calming breaths. "Please... Godhead," she spoke aloud, "it's Aeress. Please talk to me." Quietness followed. The pounding of her heart was blaring, revealing her fear.

"Picture yourself in a room," he instructed and she did as asked, "A simple room with nothing remarkable in it. Few details to remember. There's a door. Behind the door is who you seek, but only if you will them to."

Aeress steadied her breathing, inhaling and exhaling deeply and calmly. She focused on the imagery in her mind until it was all she could see or even acknowledge-this took several long, agonizing minutes of concentration. She pictured a simple wooden door. Her hand hovered above the doorknob with apprehension.

A long time passed before she finally put her hand on the knob. She twisted but the door did not give. "It's locked?" She was confused. This was her door! Shouldn't it open if it's her door?!

Is it? A thought snaked into her mind.

She looked around the plain room. No key!

"I just want to talk," she repeated to herself, trying to prevent herself from chickening out. She leaned toward the door and pressed her ear against the surface to listen in. "Hello?"

Something flew from under the door, scaring Aeress half to death. She picked it up and examined the plain, metal key.

Plan your next course of action carefully, girl.

Aeress knew exactly who was speaking to her. Was this a warning? Maybe this whole thing was a terrible idea? The last time this spirit was unleashed, a lot of people were hurt-more than hurt.

And then she thought back to the whole reason she needed to do this in the first place. She'd fail the trials, maybe even die if she didn't try to find herself in accord with Godhead.

"I'm doing this for us," Aeress responded cautiously. "You've been in my head, you must know what is going on."

You've locked me away, scared girl. So scared, very scared. And what of? One cannot fear themselves, can they?

Aeress didn't know whether she should be reassured. This voice was compelling and ancient, echoing for a thousand years. She wanted to trust it, but she couldn't get past the images of the carnage this creature had caused.

She approached the door and sighed. "I am going to open the door now... Just, please..." She didn't know what she was pleading for as she put the key in the lock and turned it. The knob twisted, opening the door.

A rush of cold blasted in her face. Aeress looked into the shadows.

Inch by inch, a figure stepped into the light. Aeress gasped at such a beautiful creature.

She was dressed in the clothes Aeress was. Her skin was simply fantastic to look at, covered in scales that of a dragon. Her facial features were pulled into a sharpened point, but it could've been Aeress in special effect makeup. Her black locks were braided here and there, matching her enormous black claws. Her eyes were red, endless, resembling a pit of fire.

She licked her elongated fangs. Aeress stepped back when she stepped forward. She was terrified and also in awe.

     "Godhead?"

You still fear me, girl. Her voice echoed but her lips did not form any words.

Aeress nodded. "You killed those people. Slaughtered them."

I did not kill anyone. I served justice, understand that, girl.

"I don't understand who you are... Why me?"

The creature watched her intently. You reject me? I protect you, bring you life, yet you still do not understand. You are not ready for me, but I must have freedom for only then can I have justice. This time I will spare you, for I am fair.

"What-No, please-" She screamed as the creature took a hold of her body and tossed her into the room of shadows.

     Stay here.

Aeress scrambled toward the door, but it had already been slammed shut. It was locked.

"Let me out!" Aeress shouted, unable to any source of light but the strip underneath the door. She no longer felt connected to the outside world, she felt stuck in her own head.

"Warrick!" she pounded against the door. "Warrick! No, no, don't hurt him!" She was screaming to the top of her lungs. Someone was going to die, she just knew it.

"Open the fucking door!" she pounded on the door until her hands were bleeding and her throat was sore from exertion. Aeress laid on the floor to get a look under the door. The creature had gone out into the world.

She began to cry. Because she was scared and she was angry, but mostly scared.

So when all energy left her-this took a while-Aeress just stayed there, sitting in the shadows, listening to the silence and praying she would return.

She sat up with a shit ton of confusion. What the hell was she doing on the beach?

She looked down at herself and started to hypervenilate. Her shirt and pants were covered in blood, some shades darker than others.

And then she remembered what happened and knew that it was not her own blood.

She shook her head, wishing it all to be a dream-more like a nightmare. "No, please. I don't want to kill any more people." She began to scratch at the blood quite literally on her hands. This was all her fault, because she had been stupid to contact the creature.

     "Aeress?"

Aeress squinted through the morning light to see the figure walking cautiously toward her. Her eyes widened. He knelt by her side. She immediately searched him for marks. "Did I hurt you?" She hated herself when she found claw marks deeply scratched into his neck. It probably wasn't the only damaged place. "I hurt you. Oh my God, I'm so sorry, Warrick. I can't get the blood off!" she rubbed and rubbed until her own flesh tinted pink.

Without a word, he lead her to the water. She calmed as he rinsed the blood off of her. The sea was cold and crisp, but it was helpful in bringing her back to reality. She looked as his copper locks glittered and his bright eyes shown more so than ever before. Watching him work so tenderly to wash away her sins made her heart ache.

They stood in the water, Aeress leaning all of her weight into him. "How many are dead?"

"Three this time. I tried to keep her attention on me."

    "Who did I kill?"

He shrugged, gently pushing his fingers through her locks, against her scalp. "It doesn't matter, you didn't kill them."

She put the blood underneath her fingernails on display for him to see. "But I did, didn't I? What did I do to you?"

He grabbed a hold of her so that their gazes clashed. His set expression told her that he was about as serious as someone like Warrick can be. "None of this was your fault. I should have known better. I should have known that she was too strong. I should have taken better precautions. This isn't your world and I threw you to the wolves. All of this, those people that are dead, that is on me. Do not ever blame yourself for this, understand? And those three people, they were all terrible and will not be missed "

She was trembling with guilt and fear. "I've killed more people than most serial killers, Warrick. What kind of demon does this? Your people, they praise her like some God, but I know the truth, she is the Devil." She hated this creature, this bringer of death.

He furrowed his dark, slashing eyebrows and sighed. He shook his head. "You must learn to communicate or else she will eventually take over with or without your permission, as we have seen you do already. We will be better prepared next time, I will make sure of it."

"What if she never lets me come back?"

He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. His warmth gave the console she needed. "We need to go back. Just trust me, Aeress. We will find a way."
