Despite the wound in its rear leg, the wolf ran at top speed, putting as much distance between itself and the humans and their guns as it could.

One of the humans in a recently arrived vehicle had jumped out and pursued the wolf on foot for a couple of blocks. But, even wounded, and with its leg burning in intense flashes of white-hot light, the wolf ran much faster than a human could ever hope to.

Racing past block after block, the wolf kept running until the scent of the humans and their weapons were far behind.

It began to slow down as it reached an area with plenty of bushes, trees and grass.

The steel, concrete and metal buildings still nearby, this wooded area was the first comforting thing the wolf found.

And it was so tired.

Dawn was approaching. Despite the effect of the lights in the city, the wolf could still detect the subtle change in the atmosphere that came with the hour immediately preceding daylight’s first gleaming.

The wolf knew what that meant.

It needed to find a spot – a safe spot, to lie down and rest.

Yes, all would be fine, everything would be okay, if it could just get some rest.

It would sleep, a long, fitful sleep.

And it would recover and heal while it slept.

To wake once more, upon the rise of the moon, to prowl this concrete, metal and glass island it called home.
