1998

'You bitch!' Robin's voice was so high-pitched and loud it hurt my ears. 'Are you saying I'm dumb?  I'm going to rip that bun off your ugly head!'

'Aaaargh!' It felt as if my hair was being torn out at the roots. I flapped my arms, trying to slap her off. One hand connected with her arm and she let go of my hair. Before my brain could connect with what my body was doing, I grabbed her wrists together with one hand, grabbed her ponytail with the other and yanked as hard as I could.

'Ow!' she screamed at the sky. She managed to pull her hands out of my grip and started pummelling me with her fists.

'You're going to be a sad virgin forever,' she squealed. Oh, how wrong this little pip squeak was. Behind Robin's angry red face, I saw a multi-coloured blur of waving arms. The students of Willis High roared like a crowd in a stadium. The shrieks coming from Robin were like nothing I'd ever heard before - and I'd once taken Stephanie's niece to a One Direction concert.

I somehow managed to handcuff her wrists together again with my hand. I pushed my other palm hard against her shoulder and flipped her around so she fell on her back. She kicked her legs and dug her nails into my fingers as I straddled her.

'This is for being such a nasty piece of shit you stupid cow!' I shouted.

She wrestled her hands out of my grip and pain seared my face as her long, pointy fingernails ran down my cheek.

As I screamed, I instinctively raised my hand and swung it down with all my might. My hand collided with the side of her face. I felt my palm sting as her head rolled to the side. She looked shocked and frightened, her eyes wide. Panting, I hovered above her and stared down, wanting to intimidate her.

'Lezzers!' shouted Mudsey.

It was then that I felt a very strong grip my arm. Someone yanked me to my feet.

'Girls!' bellowed Mr. Fenton. 'Stop it now!'

Mr. H restrained Robin by placing his hands on her arms. She wriggled around like she was trying to get out of a straightjacket.

'We all knew that the day you actually talked would be the day you showed what a freak you are!' she shouted.

'Dumb cow!' I hollered as Mr. Fenton dragged me by the wrist towards the principal's office.

'That's enough, Sammy,' he growled.

'Don't worry Mr. Fenton, I'm finished.'

'We're just getting started with you, young lady,' he replied.

'What the hell has gotten into you today Sammy?' mum seethed.

An hallucinogenic pink pill. That's what had gotten into me today. I wondered if she'd buy that story if I told her. Instead, I shrugged and stayed silent. My cheek stung and my top knot was a tangle of hair hanging around the nape of my neck. God knows what my lipstick looked like now. I had visions of it smeared all over my chin and cheeks, so I looked like some horrific, homicidal clown. Look out, Pennywise, you had some competition.

'Trust me Principal Sutton, we'll be dealing with her when she gets home,' mum said.

'It's not my place to tell you how to discipline your daughter and I'm sure your punishment will be appropriate,' said Principal Sutton diplomatically. I admired how she'd accessorised her 'Y' shaped necklace with her faux fur collared cardigan. 'But you understand that we will also be disciplining Sammy as we see fit.'

'Of course.' Mum nodded, gripping her purse so tightly I was worried her nails would pierce slits in the shiny patent covering.

'Sammy, you've always been so well-behaved.' Principal Sutton looked concerned. 'Whatever possessed you to lash out like you did today?'

'Robin started it.' I shrugged and raised my fingertips to gently touch the scratches on my face. The sting made me wince.

'Don't touch your sores,' snapped mum. 'And answer Principal Sutton properly.'

And put your shoulders back. And don't have that piece of chocolate cake.

These women were not that much older than me, really. Mum would have been around Colin's age and Principal Sutton didn't look any older than 35. I had a major advantage over Robin. I could talk to Principal Sutton on her level – make her understand why I did what I did. She'd understand, surely? Every school had a Robin Lewis that needed to be put in her place.

'Look, here's the deal,' I began. Principal Sutton gave mum an impatient look and mum sat up straighter. My tone wasn't what either of them had been hoping to hear. 'Robin isn't a very nice person. In fact, she's a bully. A lot of us don't want to go to school because we're afraid of her.'

I turned to mum. 'Mum, remember that party a few years ago, when I'd come home crying? Robin had only invited me and Penny so she could humiliate us in front of everyone. You always wonder why I'm so shy. She's the bloody reason!'

'Language Sammy,' she said in a firm voice.

'It's true, though. After all the insults she's given me over the years... I mean, I say one little thing to her and she couldn't take what she'd been dishing out.'

'And what did you say Sammy?' asked Principal Sutton.

'I told her she was dumb,' I admitted.

'Low blow Sammy.' Principal Sutton shook her head. 'You don't get ahead by cutting other people down.'

Try telling that to the marketing department of Smith Bank, I felt like telling her. This woman needed a lesson about the real world.

'Sammy, I'm not stupid,' she continued. 'It hasn't escaped my attention that Robin isn't the most well behaved student here. She'll also be getting punished.'

'So what are you going to do?' I asked. 'Suspension? Expulsion?'

'Sammy!' Mum looked like I'd just signed my own death warrant.

'I'm not going to suspend or expel either of you. But I am going to put the two of you in detention after school for three days a week for the next three months.'

'What, together? We'll kill each other!' I laughed in disbelief.

'You think this is funny young lady?' Principal Sutton gave me a warning look.

'Sorry, no. I just think you're asking for trouble putting me and her in the same room together for three months.'

'That's the point,' she said. 'You two will learn to be civil to each other. And if you aren't, I will expel the pair of you.'

'That sounds fine,' said mum quickly, scraping her chair back. It was as if she were a really bad defence lawyer and the prosecution had just offered her the best deal she could get.

Whatever. I wouldn't be in this little play fighting world tomorrow anyway. I'd go to bed tonight and wake up next to a very hungover Penny. And I could tell her all about the dream I had where Willis High felt the previously dormant wrath of Sammy Day.
