Chapter Eight: "Live In Iowa In A Ranch House Beside Gigi Hadid."

MY PEACEFUL SLEEP was ruined by my phone. My stupid phone.

Whoever was calling better have a good reason.

Keeping my eyes shut, I shuffled to get closer to the nightstand where I had left my phone last night but Sam's arm around me tightened and pulled me to his chest.

He groaned in my ear and his voice was low and groggy. "Hazel just a few more minutes."

I almost laughed, trying to pull him off of me. That didn't seem to work when he took a hold of my body and put me on top of his, my head on his chest and his arms hugging me towards him. "Let me get my phone. Someone's trying to FaceTime me."

"Fuck them. Baby let's sleep."

Now I was fully awake due to my constant moving boyfriend. I sighed, raising myself up as the ringing from my phone stopped. "How did you sleep?" I mumbled against his skin.

He buried his nose in my hair, inhaling deeply which made me flush. "I would sleep a whole lot better if you stayed in bed with me and did not pick up the phone."

The ringing started again and Sam groaned loudly. "Fucking hell. Why couldn't we just have a lazy day? That's all I want at the moment."

"You want to have a lazy day?" I asked him for confirmation.

"Yeah we can just lie here, sleep, watch a movie on my laptop. Make Peter get us popcorn. Just stay here. Can't you take off work today?" Sam sighed, his hand slipping up the back of my shirt and rubbing the skin on my back and sending tingles through me.

God, he was making me want to stay here and not get out of this spot forever.

"Sam..." I whined as the ringing was persistent and I felt like whoever was calling me was never going to give up. That's when I realized who it probably was.

"It's Caleb isn't it?" He muttered.

"I'm guessing." I told him as he let me go and I reached over for my phone. Sam put his forearm over his eyes and I pressed a kiss to his cheek before accepting the call. In a couple of seconds Caleb's face appeared on my phone screen. I looked at the tiny screen showing me at the bottom corner and realized I looked more like a mess than usual.

"Hey Charming."

"Hola princess."

"Where's our peasant?" He asked, his eyes lighting up. He was in a bedroom and I could see him sitting up and light streaming into the room.

Sam rolled his eyes and his face held a strong sign of annoyance. He pushed himself up next to me, huffing and rubbing his tired eyes adorably. "Shut the fuck up Caleb. It's too early for me to hear your ugly voice."

"Your voice is uglier jackass. It's only ten o'clock over there, how is that too early?"

"It just is," Sam squinted at his best friend, leaning his head on my arm. "What do you-"

"Dude, did you two have sex?"

That fully woke me up now as my eyes widened. "What?"

Caleb turned his gaze on me. "You know sexual intercourse Macy. Didn't you learn about this? Hello? When you put the pe-"

"I KNOW WHAT IT IS!" I stop him, closing my eyes for a moment. "But why would you think we did?"

"Because he's shirtless."

"He always sleeps shirtless idiot."

"Oh..."

"What do you want?" Sam asked, finally finishing his question.

"Happy six month anniversary guys! We made it!"

Sam and I stared at him before exchanging glances. I mean six months didn't seem like such a big deal compared to a year or two years or a decade but it was a pretty big deal for us...and Caleb.

"We?" I asked him, giving him my confused face.

"Yes we! I'm as much a part of this relationship as you guys. In fact I am the glue that holds you two together." He placed a hand to his heart, patting it a couple times with a prideful look on his face.

"You're the glue that gets sticky on everyone's hands and they wish would come off quickly yet...I can't ever seem to get rid of you." Sam muttered, glaring at Caleb.

Caleb grinned widely. "Love you too Samuel."

"Caleb we will call you later."

"But-"

"We will call you back." Sam said, quickly cancelling and Caleb's face disappeared from my screen.

Sam put my phone on 'Do Not Disturb' and turned off the ringer, placing it on the nightstand. He laid back down in bed, pulling me with him as he snuggled close to me, closing his eyes.

"Are we still going to have a lazy day?"

"We could if you take off work," Sam mumbled as I twirled a piece of his hair around my finger. "But I was going to take you out tonight whether you wanted to or not."

"I already took off Sunday last week. I have work in an hour. We're going on a date?"

"Think of it as a special date."

One of Sam's eyes opened as he looked over at me. A smile played on his lips s he kissed his way up my arms to the place where my shoulder and neck met. I let out a shaky breath as he his hands gripped my waist and he moved his kisses upward until his lips were by the corner of my mouth. "Happy six months Hazel."

He pulled away only to lie down and close his eyes.

I swatted him on the shoulder to which he recoiled. "Ouch, what did I do now?"

"You're a tease." I muttered, climbing out of bed.

"I'm a tease? We should switch bodies for a day and see how much of a tease you are every time I see you." Sam's eyes were fully open now and he didn't look tired anymore.

He got out of bed and locked his hands upward to stretch and my eyes widened at the sight. Holy cows. He ruffled his curly hair, smirking as he caught me looking at him. "I know Hazel I know."

"Cocky." I said under my breath he put on a pair of sweatpants and we left the room. I rubbed my eyes so I could be more awake. "I need to shower badly."

"We could shower together if you want." Sam suggested and I almost pushed him into the wall, rolling my eyes.

"No, no, you would just be a distraction and I would never get to work on time." I quickly rushed into the bathroom and did my morning routine including a shower that took like five minutes in Sam's bathroom. I brushed my teeth with the spare toothbrush and running my fingers through my hair to make it semi presentable. I was changed into a pair of jeans and a shirt I had left here a while ago.

Sam was in the kitchen already dressed and his curly hair wet and stringy. He was looking over the pancakes on the stove and I sat down at the island, looking through my phone. My mind flashed back to Caleb this morning. "What's wrong?" Sam asked me, a concern look on his face.

I locked my phone, placing it on the table. "It's just Caleb. I'm worried about him."

"What's there to worry about Hazel? Caleb's Caleb."

"No, no, Caleb isn't just...Caleb. He's the kind of guy that hides his pain behind-"

"A smile," Sam finished off, turning his back to me as he turned off the stove and put the last of the pancakes on a plate. He pushed the plate towards me and went to the cabinet to give me the bottle of syrup. I went to the fridge grabbing milk as we settled ourselves beside each other on the island eating. "Caleb doesn't like people looking at him as if he's the saddest person in the world."

"I know. It's just all these signs that's something is wrong with him."

"Like what?"

"The other day he called me right and he had been at a girl's house after they did stuff."

"So he had a one night stand?"

"Yeah," I said, pausing as I took a sip of the milk from the glass cup. "Did you know that?"

Sam ran a hand through his wet hair, looking conflicted at the news. "No. Do you know if this has been happening often?"

"No I didn't ask."

"I get that he does it once in a while but Caleb can do what he wants Hazel. He may not act like one but he's an adult."

"I get that. He's...actually almost 18. Remember? His birthday is next month. We're 18. You're almost 19. But even after his call today I feel like Caleb's..."

"He's what?"

I struggle to find the proper word but frown when I do. "Lonely. I feel like Caleb is lonely." Sam stiffened and he stopped eating. He placed his fork on top of a pancake, staring intensely at a spot on the marble counter. He didn't say anything but I felt the need to continue talking about my observation.

"I mean he has you. You're like his brother. He has friends. He has his real brother, Leo. He has your family. He has his Tia Maria. But somehow even with all these people in life I think that he thinks he's missing something. However, he doesn't want to tell us because he hides that behind jokes, smiles and laughter."

Sam closed his eyes briefly and I could tell fists clenched underneath the table because his arm flexed and his veins protruded underneath the surface of his skin. "Shit."

"What?"

"How did I not notice that? He's my best friend and I couldn't even tell. He lost his parents at a young age, he lost the love of his life. Of course he's still going through something," Sam got up from his stool and started to pace the kitchen, muttering to himself. "Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I can't even help him when he helped me. I don't know how."

"Hey, hey, hey," I grabbed Sam by the arm and pulled him towards me to stop moving, to stop making the situation more complex for him. "Time, Sam. All Caleb needs is time. Yes he has distractions but he needs time. He needs us and even if we are in different countries we will still be there for him. We will always be there for him. You'll always be there for him."

Sam didn't say anything for a couple of minutes. His eyes flickered around the room before locking on mine. He leaned in, his lips pressing against my forehead, his touch still lingering even when he pulled away. He grabbed his phone and instantly started typing in it. I heard the sound of him calling someone on speaker. "SAMMY!" Caleb yelled into the phone.

Sam took a deep breath, a smile playing on his lips. "Hey Caleb."

"You called back." He sounded surprised.

"Yeah."

"What for? You never call back it's always me calling you back after you hang up on me."

"I just wanted to tell you something."

"What is it? Is it that you're hopelessly in love with me and you're breaking up with princess so that you can be with me forever-"

"No-"

"And we'll adopt five kids and live in Iowa in a ranch house beside Gigi Hadid-"

Sam almost started laughing. "No you idiot that's not what I'm going to tell-Gigi Hadid?"

"Yeah," If it was possibly I could hear the smile in Caleb's voice. "She's my woman crush every day." Sam shook his head laughing and I could see him mouth 'Iowa?' in disbelief. "But what were you going to say?"

"I was just going to tell you that I love you man."

There was a pause on the other side. "Sam...I was clearly joking when I meant all the stuff about love and kids and Iowa but not about woman crush-"

"You know what I mean you prick."

Caleb laughed loudly and it slowly disappeared. "Yeah sorry this is just a shock. You never really tell me that voluntarily."

"I know I don't but I thought I should."

I heard shuffling on the other end. "Well I love you too man."

Sam nodded. "I'll let you go now. I'll call you tonight."

"No don't. It's your anniversary, go have fun man. Go drink white wine in the blushing light." Did he just quote-

"Thanks mate."

"Anytime." Caleb let out a breathless laugh before ending the call.

Sam put his phone in his pocket as I devoured my food, looking up at the clock. "I got to get to work."

"Come on I'll drive you."

When Sam had parked outside of the bookstore, I glanced over at him. "You okay?"

"Yeah I have practice at three today but I'll pick you up at seven." I kissed him on the lips briefly before pulling away.

"Got it." I told him as I started to get out of the car but his hand on my wrist pulled me back.

"Wait," he looked at me quizzically as if he couldn't figure out something. "I'm in love with you, you know that right?"

"I know that every day." I told him.

"I just felt the need to give you a reminder."

"Why?" I asked him, furrowing my eyebrows.

"I'll see you Hazel." He smiled at me, letting me go and not answering my question.

"I'll see you Jerk." I have him a smile back let him know that I was half teasing.

He raised an eyebrow at me and I shrugged, closing the door and entering the bookstore. It bugged me. That something wasn't just going on with Caleb but with Sam too. But why couldn't he tell me?

I thought about this even when I got back to the dorms and passed by our residential adviser, George a senior prefect. He gave me a small smile, coming out of...Maddy and I's room. What the heck?

Maddy sat down on her bed, her headphone on and her eyes intensely looking at the screen over her glasses. I dropped my things on my bed and stared at her. I stared at her long enough that I heard her laugh at whatever was on the screen like ten times before she looked up and noticed I was there. "HEY MACY!"

My eyes widened and I took the headphone off her ears. "No need to yell. I am right here."

"Sorry but I was just watching-"

"Nope explain to me why George just came out of our room?"

Maddy shrugged. "I lent him some CD's and he just came to give them back."

"Uh-huh." I muttered, not really believing her.

"What we're just friends!"

"Uh-huh." I repeated.

Maddy rolled her eyes, closing her laptop. "Isn't it your anniversary today?"

"Yes, yes it is."

"What are you two doing?"

"He's taking me out."

"To where?"

"To dinner."

"Fancy?"

"I guess so." I drawled the word out, wondering where she was going with all the questions.

"When is he picking you up?"

"Seven."

Maddy's eyes widened as she took out her phone and looked at the time. "We have only an hour and a half to get you ready."

"It would take me like ten minutes to get ready Mads."

"No, no, no, tonight is a special night. You're not going out in a blouse or jeans or sweats. You my friend are wearing a dress and we need another girl's input on this. What about Jasmine?"

Maddy had met Jasmine through Skype. They had clicked obviously but with her seemingly avoiding everyone I just didn't want to feel disappointed when she wouldn't answer the call. I shook my head. "No let's get Stevie instead. I doubt she's sleeping on her side."

"Sure."

Maddy was already set on curling my hair when Stevie's face popped up on the screen of my laptop. She was in her room at her house, looking like she needed to take ten cups of coffee. Daylight was streaming into her room from the window and her grey eyes looked tired but she put on a smile. "Hey Macy. Hey Maddy."

"What's wrong with you?" I asked her.

She shot me a pointed look. "What a great way to say hello Mace. You really set the standards high."

"Hey!" I said enthusiastically, my face brightening with a smile before I quickly frowned. "But seriously what's wrong with you?"

"School. School is what is currently wrong with me."

"I thought it would your overwhelming love of KPOP or Korean Dramas that would tear you down."

That's when she suddenly looked more awake. "Never. I love the Korean music industry too much for that."

"We know." I deadpanned, remembering the time I was at her house and she had a bunch of posters of KPOP artist in her room. She went to conventions and meet ups also. Sometimes I would hate that when she talks about KPOP I would have no idea what the hell she was talking about but it was pretty cool to hear and learn a little bit about another country's type of music.

"Anyway what's," she paused to take a yawn and rubbed her eyes, "happening?"

"Six month anniversary of Samuel Cahill and the future Mrs. Cahill."

I gave Maddy a look but didn't say anything as Stevie grinned. "Damn Macy six months. We'll be hearing the wedding bells and the 'bye's as we send you guys off for your honeymoon."

"Um...I think you're mixing Sam and I with Ivan and Natasha."

Stevie's eyes widened a bit. "I almost forgot about their wedding."

"You should sleep Stevie." I told her.

"I can't I have so much to do this weekend and-"

"No...I'm begging you to go to sleep. You look like-"

"Hell. You look like hell."

"Thanks Maddy," Stevie shot her a dry look before putting a hand through her blonde hair and pushing it out of her face in frustration. "You should've made her hair wavy."

"Yeah I know but she had work today and there isn't enough time to make this thing she calls hair perfect." Way to sound like Natalie.

"She'd look nice in waves."

"I know right." Maddy agreed.

"Uh thank you?" I said, narrowing my eyes at Stevie before looking at Maddy out of the corner of my eye.

"How's Cedric?" Maddy asked Stevie, both of them talking as if I was not in the room.

"He's good although we live in the same country I haven't seen him for weeks but we talk every day."

"All you people have someone and I'm literally just here bored with my life." Maddy said as I pointed to my camera sitting on my bed.

"Um...what about George?" I muttered, as Maddy got it for me and I was flipping through my photos.

"Who's George?" Stevie asked, raising her eyebrows.

"He's just a friend." Maddy mumbled, now at the side of me and concentrating on my hair.

"That's what they all say." Stevie and I said at the exact same time.

"Jinx. You owe me a soda." I called out.

She rolled her eyes. "Sometimes I find it hard to believe that you're 18."

I gave her a face before sighing. "I'm serious Stevie you should really sleep."

She yawned once more and nodded. "Alright, night y'all."

"Night." Maddy and I said at the same time as I ended the video chat and closed my laptop.

"But seriously...what about George?" I asked her again.

Maddy rolled her eyes at me. "There's nothing going on between George and I. I don't even see him that way. Since when do you naturally like talking about this subject?"

"What subject?"

"You know...I mean you're in love and stuff but you're not the type to really talk about it unless I bring it up."

I shrugged. "I don't know. It's not like I feel the need to broadcast my relationship to the world."

"You keep things on the low." Maddy suggested.

I let out a breathless laugh. "Yeah I guess I keep things on the low."

"What about Sam?" she asked.

"I don't know about him. There are times where he would be like 'you're mine' and a little bit of possessiveness and wanting to let everyone know that I'm his. Other than that, he doesn't broadcast our relationship in the over the top kind of way. It's hard to explain."

"Okay...what's the most public thing you guys have done?"

I raised an eyebrow as she stopped straightening and stood in front of
