Opening your eyes, you felt different. You felt warm, complete... whole. You took a moment to find your balance- ground yourself. Taking a deep breath, you looked around over a sea of shocked and smiling faces... that's right, "over." Because all of a sudden, you were freakishly tall. You squinted at your hands, flipping them back and forth. they were so... big. And your arms were... significantly hairier.

"What is this?" you muttered to yourself. But when the words came out, you didn't recognize the voice.

It's okay.

"Steven?" you asked aloud.

Before you could understand what was happening, you fell to the ground. Suddenly shorter, smaller, and less hairy.

You groaned, rubbing your thigh that you had landed on. "What just happened?" you thought aloud.

"(Y/N)!" Steven appeared above you, his hand outstretched. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," you replied, taking his hand and standing up. "What... was that?" you looked at Steven, still feeling disoriented.

"We fused!" he smiled tentatively, eagerly waiting for your reaction.

"We..." you spoke breathlessly. "That's what it feels like? I had no idea..."

"Pretty cool, right?"

"Very cool," you laughed in disbelief.

"Wanna do it again?"

"Yeah, but... not right now," you looked over your shoulder at the approaching crowd, then back to Steven. "I get the feeling that we're about to get questioned."

Right on cue, you and Steven became surrounded by all of your friends and peers, each one of them full of questions.

Kevin and Jamie made their way to the front of the crowd, with Kevin excitedly leading the way. "(Y/N)!" he hollered, grabbing your arm. "What the fuck just happened?"

"Steven and I- we fused," you smiled brightly.

"Oh my god!" Jamie squealed as Kevin pulled the two of you into a group hug.

You felt like a kid at a sleepover, gossiping about boy crushes over bottles of nail polish and empty bags of chips. You embraced the feeling, getting caught up in the nostalgia and whimsy of the moment. You hugged Kevin and Jamie for a moment extra.

"Wait," Kevin started, pulling back. "So... isn't fusion like... gem sex?"

"NO," Steven said, abruptly cutting into the conversation. "No, it is not."

"I thought only gems could fuse...?" a voice piped from the crowd.

Steven looked every which way, trying to find where the voice had come from; "right, but I'm half human, so-"

"Was that Stevonnie?" said another voice.

"Uh, no- that's only with Connie," Steven smiled tightly.

A voice from the back of the crowd hollered above the rest; "can you elaborate on 'gem sex'?"

"IT'S NOT-" Steven stopped himself, taking a deep breath; in and out. "Look, fusion isn't exclusively a romantic thing, okay? I fuse with my dad!"

"You have gem sex with your dad?"

"NO!"

"So..." a girl you didn't recognize approached Steven. "Does that mean this is your girlfriend, or are you still on the market?"

You felt a twinge of jealousy as you turned to Steven, your face flushing. You tried to look unbothered, but you were really hoping he would say what you wanted.

Girlfriend.

"Uh... definitely not 'on the market,'" Steven chuckled awkwardly, feeling your stare.

"So she's..." the girl raised an eyebrow expectantly.

Steven glanced at you quickly, then sputtered out; "y-yeah, she's my girlfriend."

Kevin's grip on your arm tightened as he and Jamie made unintelligible sounds of gay excitement. Everyone seemed to be excited, really. Especially you, but you didn't want to seem too excited. You tried your best to look calm and collected as you watched Steven address the group;

"Okay, okay, that's enough questions," he changed the subject. "Go talk to Garnet. She'll talk about fusion for hours."

Before anyone could say anything else, Steven took your hand and whisked you away to the tables off of the dance floor.

"So... boyfriend?" you tilted your face upwards to meet his gaze once the two of you had stopped moving. Now you stood face-to-face, Steven's fingertips gingerly intertwined with your own.

"Uh-yeah! I... hope that's okay," he replied, running his fingers through his hair with his free hand. "I mostly just said that to get out of there."

"Mostly?" you let your head fall to the side slightly, examining Steven's face.

"Yeah- well, no, not mostly, just-"

To save him from his own rambling, you stood on your tip-toes and gave Steven a gentle peck on the lips.

"Boyfriend," you smiled, just inches from his face.

"Girlfriend," Steven smiled back, his nerves melting away.

You relaxed your feet and lowered yourself back down to your non-tippy-toes height. "So, boyfriend," you elbowed Steven's side playfully. "May I have this dance?"

"Why yes, girlfriend," he smiled and twirled you under his arm. "Yes you may."

The two of you giggled and made your way back to the dance floor, slowly picking up speed as you walked. You looked at Steven, who sped up after looking at you. You returned the favor, back and forth, until before you knew it, you were both running- racing back to the dance floor. When the cloudy floor beneath your feet transformed into the familiar wooden dance floor rental, you slid on your heels with Steven close behind.

You waved your arms every which way to stay balanced as your sliding slowed to a stop. You stood with your hands on your hips and laughed triumphantly.

"Good race, girlfriend!" Steven spoke up from behind you, his hand outstretched for a sportsmanlike handshake.

You dragged your feet towards him, unbelievably winded. "You..." panting, you halfheartedly hit Steven's chest with your fists. "You let me win," you laughed.

Steven gasped dramatically, "I would never."

"You're magic, dummy."

"Hm... that doesn't sound like me."

"Don't you have... super speed?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Steven," you looked up at him, aghast. "How are we ever going to have a happy and healthy relationship if you won't stop gaslighting me?"

You both looked at each other for a long moment before dropping the act and bending over with laughter.

After endless hours of laughs, smiles, and aching feet, people began to gather their things, and what was once a huge crowd became a small handful of your closest friends.

"Steven, you sure it's okay if I head out?" Sour Cream asked, carrying his deejaying gear packed up in a trunk.

"Yeah, of course!" Steven nodded. "It's like, midnight, Sour Cream. Go get some sleep."

"Right on," SC nodded with a smirk. "See ya."

"Bye Sour Cream," you and Steven both waved goodbye. With him, left everyone else. After all, what was a party without music? You started walking back to the tables, but Steven took your hand from behind.

"Hang on-" he said, gently pulling you back towards him. "Just because the DJ left doesn't mean we can't still dance."

"But Steven..." you looked at him, confused. "There's no music."

"We don't need music," he brought your hand up to his shoulder and placed his on your waist. "Just feel it." Steven took his other hand and put it on your heart, just above your breast.

"Feel that?" he asked, your pounding heart answering him for you. "That's the beat. And your breath..." he looked to you, and you audibly breathed in and out. "That's the melody."

You clasped your hands behind Steven's neck, inching closer to him. "Any lyrics?" you asked.

"Well sure," he responded, tucking a stray hair behind your ear. "We're speaking them."

You smiled up at Steven as he brought both his hands around your waist, inadvertently bringing you closer together.

Lifting your chin so that you could make eye contact, you whispered; "I love you."

Steven smiled gently and closed the gap between the two of you, kissing you slowly. "I love you too," he muttered, his breath warm on your lips.

You smiled and let your cheek fall onto his chest, hugging him close, while he rested his chin on the top of your head, holding you as if you could blow away at any second. And in those exact positions, you stayed for... who knows how long. Dancing to the song of love you were singing for each other, and never letting go.
