India's wedding part i

We're so fucking late and it's because of the shenanigans we were doing in the bathroom. Forty minutes late. We missed the whole rehearsal, finding them already started with the dinner. We join the dinner table, where we find everybody seated already and we take our seats, greeting everyone while we're at it. I can't help but blush when Devontae makes sure to pull out my chair for me and scoots me in as well.

"Well, don't you look fully rested." I narrow my eyes at my cousin, who has a this look on her face that I wanna slap off. India plays oblivious and servers bring our appetisers.

"Holy, shit aren't you Devontae Carter?" Jason recognises him instantly and Devontae simply nods his head, bashfully and reaching out to shake his hand.

"India, you never told us that we were gonna have a celebrity in attendance." This girl with jet black hair and greenish eyes comments. I look at her properly to notice her scandalous outfit and the fuck me eyes she's giving to Devontae. She extremely beautiful I'll give her that but clearly can't tell that he's not interested.

The room buzzes with chatter around Devontae's presence, and I can't help but watch as he interacts with them explaining the behind the scenes of being a basketball player and being the son of a former player. Throughout dinner, I got to meet India's friends most from college and through Jason. The green eyed woman who I've come to know as Daya doesn't bother hiding her obvious flirtatious behaviour, which to her disappointment has let down easy and it's getting on my last goddamn nerve.

"Okay! Now we're going to start this again! Everyone pay attention, please!" India yells and everyone gets into position.

I'm busy talking to one of the bridesmaids who's name I can't remember when I feel a hand on my lower back followed by something one quarter of my height attack my legs.

When I look down, I see a green-eyed, curly-haired child. Her black curls are tied up in pigtails and missing one tooth at the front. She's adorable and she's also my niece.

I bend down and pick up the child and perch her on my hip. When her eyes meet Devontae's, she smiles brightly to which he smiles back. I look at my niece with a bright smile. I pick her up and throw her up in the air which makes her giggle hysterically, "hi, Auntie Kiki."

Aqua's brownish-green eyes meet Devontae who watches us with amusement, and she looks back at me, "is he your boyfriend, Aunt Kiki?" I choke on-air and Devontae simply offers the both of us a lazy grin, "uh, no, baby he's, my friend." Aqua's nose scrunches up, "really?" I nod, "yes, sweetie. He's just a friend."

Aqua's pigtails bob as she tilts her head to the side as her eyes rakes my face, "I don't believe you. You can't have a friend who's a boy."

My brows raise, "really? Who said that?" Aqua avoids eye contact with me before saying, "Uncle Mike did." Of course, he did.

"Yeah, well you can have friends who are boys, but that's not important right now. You wanna say hi?" Aqua nods enthusiastically and I place her down on her feet. The little girl looks up at Devontae, he scoops her up into his arms picks and I'm holding my breath, "you have pretty eyes, just like your auntie." Devontae says, momentarily glancing in my direction when he says the last part, and Aqua smiles so big.

"You have pretty eyes too!" Aqua compliments and he throws his head back in laughter, "I don't think a guy's eyes can be pretty, princess." Aqua shakes her head in disagreement, "Can too! I know many pretty boys!" He arches a brow at her, "really? Who?"

"You and um. . . Prince Naveen."

He laughs again at the little girl's cuteness, "Okay, then if I'm as pretty as Prince Naveen then I accept."

"Yay!" And Aqua throws her arms around Devontae's neck in a hug and I swear I feel my ovaries explode. He wraps his arms around the little girl and places her on her feet, she begins to run off but comes back to hug me before running off to her parents.

"You're good with kids," I tell him, he looks down at me, "I have experience in that department."

I can't help but imagine Devontae holding a little toddler in his arms only this time with caramel curls and dark mocha eyes and a big toothy smile. I shake the image out of my head as I put ribs on my plate, "I bet they're not as cute as Aqua though." He chuckles, "definitely not as cute as her."

I catch that same Daya girl making eyes at Devontae, and I can't help my blood from boiling at the girl not knowing when to quit. That's when jealousy rears her ugly head. I excuse myself to the restroom and when I halt just as I'm about to turn the corner, when I overhear a voice that sounds a lot like Daya's talking on the phone, "Yeah, the one and only Devonte Carter is here. He's gonna be here the rest of the weekend. What? Nah, girl he's single. Yes, he did come with a date." She pauses before continuing, "she can't compete with me, Kita. No matter how much make up and lashes she puts on, it would hide the fact that she's fucking huge." Yeah, I've heard enough. I turn on my heel and enter the dining hall, taking my stuff ready to leave. "Woah, hey what's wrong?" Devontae whispers in my ear.

"I'm fine." His brows raise, not convinced, "did I do something wrong?" I roll my eyes and scoff, "no."

His mouth opens like he's about to say something else but that's when I remember, I'm in no position to feel this way. We're just friends. Nothing more nothing less and he can do whatever the hell he wants. With a prettier girl, a skinnier one too.

"I'm going to bed, stay as long as you like." Devontae grips onto my wrist, stopping me from walking away from him, "yo, what's going on? I feel like there's something you know that I don't." I yank my hand out of his grasp, "I said I'm good, enjoy the rest of the dinner. I'm turning in for the night."

"Kiana, you leaving already?" India asks as she joins us, she must see the distraught look on my face because she immediately goes into overprotective mode. "Who do I need to kill?"

My face crumples but I plaster on a fake smile that I know she'll see through, "just a long night, need to rest before the big day. Good night."

My chest feels heavy as I walk out of there as fast as my heels could carry me, I can't help the burning sensation of my eyes as I blink away the tears that threatened to spill over, I press the level of the room and the elevator dings when it opens just seconds after I pressed it. It's about to close, when an arm is shoved in between and it reopens, "Jesus, you're fucking fast when you want to." Devontae breathes out, as he pants getting into the elevator with me. I snicker before letting the tears spill from my eyes.

"Oh, shit." I collapse to his side, crying unconsolably. His arm goes around my waist, practically holding me up as the elevator. I'm a hyperventilating mess by the time the elevator reaches our floor. "Kiana, what happened?" We get out of the lift, walking to our suite as I try to speak, "Daya...she..." I inhale deeply trying to recollect myself, "she said no matter what lashes or makeup I put it won't hide how fat I am."

"What!?" He barks that it startles me, and I jump, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He apologises quickly, comforting me. He wipes my eyes. "She also said I cannot compete with her when it comes to you." He blinks at me, "she said what?"

I groan, covering my teary face, "Devontae, I'm really not in the mood to repeat myself." He smacks his teeth, getting up. I frown, "where you are going?"

"I'll be back."
